The Playground Choice
Clementine's Dilemma
Clementine stood quietly as her friends argued about playing stickball. Deep down, she wanted to suggest jump rope instead. "We always play what everyone else wants," she thought, twisting her medium brown hair nervously. Her heart raced as she finally spoke up, "Actually, could we try jump rope today?" To her surprise, two friends immediately agreed.

The next morning, Mom placed a bowl of oatmeal in front of Clementine. Clementine stared at it, wishing for her favorite cereal instead. She remembered yesterday's small victory and took a deep breath. "Mom, would it be okay if I had the rainbow cereal today?" she asked politely but clearly.

Clementine lay in bed that night, thinking about her day. Speaking up felt scary but also good somehow. She wondered if being assertive meant people would think she was being difficult. Her thoughts swirled as she heard the front door open – Dad was home from work.

"It sounds like you're finding your voice," Dad said, sitting on the edge of her bed. "Being assertive isn't being mean – it's just honestly sharing what you want." He smiled warmly at Clementine. "The trick is to be both kind and clear about what matters to you."
